The Manhattan cocktail is one of those drinks that seems to have been around for a long time. Even though there are many ideas about where it came from, no one is sure. In 1882, a recipe for the drink was printed for the first time in the New York Tribune. Two parts rye whiskey, one part sweet vermouth, and a dash of bitters made up this drink.
This drink is called the “classic” Manhattan, and you can find it on many menus and in cocktail books today. There are many variations on this theme. Some recipes call for just rye whiskey and bitters instead of sweet vermouth, while others call for specific brands of whiskey or bitters. This cocktail is hard to make even for experienced mixologists because each ingredient needs to be measured and added in just the right amount.
The classic Manhattan
The classic Manhattan is made with 38% sweet vermouth, 27% p.a.b. Angostura bitters, and 50% rye whiskey. If you don’t have bitters scales to accurately measure all those percentages, try one of the other variations on the theme. In the Dry Manhattan, dry vermouth is used instead of sweet vermouth, and bitters are left out. Bitters are not used in a Sweet Manhattan. Instead, sweet vermouth is used.
MANHATTAN, THE DRY
The Dry Manhattan is made with rye whiskey, dry vermouth, and nothing else. This drink may be the hardest to make right because the amount of whiskey and vermouth must be exact and the bitters can be left out. In the Sweet Manhattan, rye whiskey and sweet vermouth are used, but bitters are left out. This version of the Manhattan recipe is one of the easiest to make because the amounts of whiskey and vermouth can be changed to suit your tastes.
CHANGES TO THE THEME
The Russian Manhattan is a similar drink that uses vodka instead of rye whiskey. Some people add a little orange juice to this drink to make it a “Black Manhattan.” When it was used in ads for Absolut vodka in the 1990s, the Black Manhattan became a very popular drink very quickly. The Rob Roy is another song with this theme. Again, bitters are left out, and Scotch whisky and sweet vermouth are used instead of rye whiskey and bitters.
In the Bouquet Manhattan, Grand Marnier or another orange liqueur is used instead of sweet vermouth. Bitters are again left out. Last but not least, the Northern Manhattan is made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and a dash of Drambuie or another scotch whisky liqueur. Bitters are left out of this drink.
DRINKS CONTAINING DARK RUM
Rum is often used in drinks with a tropical theme, but it also goes well in some versions of the Manhattan. Bitters are not used in the Tropical Manhattan, which is made with two parts dark rum and one part sweet vermouth. TMost of the time, dark rum from Puerto Rico is used to make a Tropical Manhattan. The Spanish Manhattan is made with two parts light rum and one part sweet vermouth. There are no bitters in this drink. A West Indian light rum is often used to make a Spanish Manhattan.
The Jamaican Manhattan is made by mixing two parts Jamaican rum with one part sweet vermouth. There are no bitters in this drink. The Jamaican Manhattan is often made with the strong Jamaican rum. The Mojito is easy to make and may be the best tropical drink. The ingredients are lime juice, soda water, and white rum. A real Mojito needs a dash of sugar that has been mixed with lime juice.
The Manhattan cocktail is one of the most well-known drinks in the world. There are different versions of the theme, and different rums and whiskies can be used to make it. Even though this drink is well-known, it is still hard to find. Even for people who mix drinks for a living, it can be hard to make the right one. So, it makes sense that so many people want to know how to build the perfect Manhattan.
