Keep reading to learn everything you need to know before trying a do-it-yourself overhaul of your clutch.

1. Gather the Proper Tools for the Job

When replacing a PTO clutch on your own, it is important to first find a power equipment clutch tool set. This can include an adjustable wrench, metric sockets and extensions, a dead blow hammer, a safety switch bypass kit, a ¾-inch ratchet, and flat and Philips head screwdrivers.

Other necessary tools may be specific to the make and model of the tractor or vehicle. Be sure to consult a qualified professional if at any time you are unsure about the tools or procedure.

2. Understanding the Mechanics of a PTO Clutch

First, be sure to thoroughly research the mechanics of a PTO clutch before attempting to replace it. You should be familiar with the parts of the clutch and how it functions. Next, you will need to properly disconnect the tractor from any external power sources.

After disconnecting, you must then loosen the bolts that secure the clutch to the tractor to remove it.

3. Safety Measures for Replacing the Clutch

To ensure safety during clutch replacement, there are a few tips to remember. First, when doing the work, wear closed-toed shoes, safety goggles, and gloves. Additionally, use the appropriate power tools, and be sure to wear a dust mask if needed.

Loosen the necessary bolts before removing the clutch, and thoroughly clean the area before installing the new one. Taking safety precautions while replacing a clutch can protect you from any potentially dangerous situations.

4. Disconnecting the Old Clutch

When it comes to replacing a PTO clutch, it is important to pay close attention to the process of disconnecting the old clutch. To avoid complications, it is imperative to disconnect the battery cables. The next step is to release the tension on the drive belt and loosen the drive belt idler pulley.

Finally, unbolt the drive plate behind the pulley, along with any other bolts around it until it is free of the engine crankshaft. When all of these steps are done, it is now possible to separate the old clutch from the engine crankshaft.

5. Installing the New PTO Clutch

To start, align the clutch drive pulley with the engine pulley. Loosen the mounting bolts securing the clutch cover and carefully lift the cover off, taking note of the order of the components as you go. Next, inspect the clutch for any signs of wear and adjust accordingly.

Place the new clutch into the housing and use the mounting bolts to secure it. Lastly, double-check the alignment of the pulleys and recall the order of the components for correct assembly. With these tips, you’ll be able to properly replace the PTO clutch on your own.
